Lenell Davis BIO 100 L 11/11/2009 DISCUSSION The purpose of this experiment was to use the National Center for Biotechnology Information databases to find the closest phylogenetic relative for Corpulentus maritus . The information gained from the DNA sequence of Corpulentus maritus was compared to the Entrez nucleotide database. There were multiple sequences in the database that matched the DNA sequence, but it was possible to narrow down those choices based on a general score, E-value, identity score and gap value. The general score signaled how well the sequences match [1]. The E-value indicated the likely hood that the match would happen by chance [1]. Identity indicated how many of the nucleotides between the sequences match and is shown as a percentage [1]. The gap value showed how many mismatches occurred [1]. Only two sequences, both from the same organism, had the best of these values. The general scores were 1523, the E-values were 0, the identities were 99% and the gap values were 0%.
