Introduction : The purpose of this lab was to check the mechanical property of hardness of steel, aluminum, brass, and copper and to measure the stress concentration factor of rubber and elastomeric specimens. There are many different mechanical properties, which include stress, strain, elastic behavior, ductility, hardness, plastic behavior, Elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio, yield strength, and ultimate tensile strength. In this lab, we substituted hardness for strength. In order for engineers to design a machine based on different materials, their mechanical properties have to be taken into account. These are elastic properties and two main ones are stress and strain. Stress is defined as the amount load on a material divided by the area of the material. Strain is defined as how much the material changed due to the load applied. This is usually calculated by the change of length of a material divided by the original length. Hardness is the easiest mechanical property to calculate for a material, and it is really helpful. There are many different hardness tests and each one is calculated differently and compared to get an approximate estimate about a specific material’s hardness. In this lab, we used the Brinell and the Rockwell Hardness Tests and converted each measurement into a Brinell hardness number. The stress concentration factor for a material is determined by the formula k=2√(c/r) where r is the crack tip radius and c is the crack length. This factor is different in the sense that it is independent of the material. In this lab, we calculated stress concentration of a rubber grid and we analyzed the stress concentration factor for a photoelastic apparatus.
