McGILL UNIVERSITY Department of Civil Engineering and Applied Mechanics CIVE 317 Structural Engineering I Mid term examination Fall 2006 24 October 2006 Open book, open notes. Total duration 80 minutes. The examination will be marked out of 30. All calculations to be done according to NBC 2005 . State your assumptions whenever applicable. Consider Figure 1. You will recognize another variant of the industrial building that you have studied in your first two assignments. In this project, the secondary trusses are replaced by moment-resisting frames (Section AA). The primary truss (Section BB) supported by the central column (F2) and the two end-columns (A2 and L2) remains identical to its original configuration: This way, the moment frames are simply-supported on the primary truss at their mid span. The frame is modified on Line F to accommodate the door (the door height is 10 m). All the other geometric characteristics are unchanged.
