Total duration 80 minutes. The examination is marked out of 35. Québec City requires a prestigious public building, which combines a Library with a large Exhibition Hall. The proposed building is shown in section and plan on Figs. 1a and 1b, respectively. The Library floor, which provides the roof of the Exhibition Hall, is hung from a large roof truss as shown, because the structural zone of the floor is too shallow to span 25 m with a rolled shape or even a built-up beam section. The plan view of Fig. 1b is that of the Library floor level. The floor concrete slab is made of precast panels that have flexural reinforcement only in the direction parallel to the transverse section, as shown: therefore only one-way bending action is possible along that direction.
