09/29/09 Secular Judaism Islam and Judaism - Went into a culture that has over 1 billion people. Also a lot of extremes. - Story begins with Judaism, led to a reltationship with Christianity. Need to start with Muhammed, a bedoin and he starts a religious movement. Didn’t’ see it more then 3,00 people during his lifetime. - When he dies, ____ peninsula- when he dies they begin to conquer other parts. - First page of Islam is in German- Islam Belhousen- All believe that ancient texts don’t have legitimacy- can only see htem as literary figures. - Still a big part of the field that not all the texts are legit- - IN islam the Koran doesn’t have history unlike the bibles which do- Koran is a theological document. No kind of a historical story or perspective. - Chadif?- equivalent of an oral tradition in muslim. Kept before 200/300 years before starting writing it. Family tribes, had known muhamaed and each family had an interaction and passed it down. Most muslim law from the chadif?. Made of two parts: a dynasty (person that was witness and that person he told it to) and then that’s how you know if its reliable. HADITH- susceptible to mistakes- - When muhamed comes and says he has a message from god, he goes to the tribes he knows in Mecca and also goes to jews. -
