9/17/08 Chemistry and Chemical Biology GSR Meeting Summary 2008 Incident Summary – year to date, there have been 15 incidents in undergrad labs. This compares to 16 at this time last year. All of these incidents resulted in injury, most of them minor. The major contributors were 6 chemical contact and 5 glass cuts. There were 8 other incidents. This compares to 9 at this time last year. Incidents included 4 cuts, 1 spill and 1 fire. Six of the incidents occurred in labs. Six of the incidents resulted in injury. Half of the injuries resulted in treatment beyond first aid. This is an increase from last year. Spring 2007 Lab Inspection Summary - Thanks to GSRs for a great job! There were 36 deficiencies found as compared to 47 last semester and an average of 41 over the last 4 years. Comparisons of the number of deficiencies found in the labs with unannounced inspections did not show an increase in the number of deficiencies found. Depending on EH&S’s inspections plans, the committee may conduct all unannounced inspections in the Spring. The largest number of deficiencies were found in the categories of chemical labeling, peroxide checks, and unsecured cylinders. These continually make the top 5.
