Lesson Plan Section 2 Genetic Crosses PACING Regular Schedule: with lab(s): 2 days without lab(s): 1 day Block Schedule: with lab(s): 1 day without lab(s): 1/2 day OBJECTIVES 1. Differentiate between the genotype and the phenotype of an organism. 2. Explain how probability is used to predict the results of genetic crosses. 3. Use a Punnett square to predict the results of monohybrid and dihybrid genetic crosses. 4. Explain how a testcross is used to show the genotype of an individual whose phenotype expresses the dominant trait. 5. Differentiate a monohybrid cross from a dihybrid cross. NATIONAL SCIENCE EDUCATION STANDARDS LSCell1: Cells have particular structures that underlie their functions. LSCell2: Most cell functions involve chemical reactions. LSCell3: Cells store and use information to guide their functions. LSCell4 : Cell functions are regulated. LSGene1: In all organisms, the instructions for specifying the characteristics of the organism are carried in DNA. LSGene2: Most of the cells in a human contain two copies of each of 22 different chromosomes. In addition there is a pair of chromosomes that determines sex. UCP2: Evidence, models, and explanation UCP3: Change, constancy, and measurement SI1: Abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry SI2: Understandings about scientific inquiry HNS1: Science as a human endeavor HNS2: Nature of scientific knowledge HNS3: Historical perspectives FOCUS (5 MINUTES) __ Overview, TE Review the objectives listed in the Student Edition. (G ENERAL ) __ Bellringer, TE Ask students to explain how brown-eyed parents could have a blue-eyed offspring .
