Open Discussion from Thresholds in Biology Workshop 17 April 2009 A big picture theme comes through in much of our discussion, but everyone may be approaching the issue from different directions – how do we reconcile this? Is there confusion in having different approaches or doesn’t it matter? Students’ exposure to different teachers etc in the ‘knowledge’ approach begs the question ‘who puts it together and explains to students why we do things the way we do?’ Teachers seem to be playing games with this – essentially hiding things from students. Is this part of the exclusivity experts like – making it difficult for others to ‘join the club’ (and be a biologist)? A big question is ‘how much time does it take to put together a new thinking for these concepts?’ It could be working across the whole 3 years of the degree, but then the assessment, and its accompanying distractions, breaks up the flow.
