ITI Life Sciences’ Synthetic Biology Foresighting Report – Executive Summary Synthetic biology is an emerging and highly promising field, which is attracting considerable interest from academia, industry and the VC community as well as the media. The technology can address market needs in a variety of sectors and so potential applications are diverse and wide-ranging. The application areas include bioenergy, chemical synthesis, drug development, biosensor development and tissue engineering, all of which are of high commercial and societal value. Although the technology is advancing continually, enabling technologies still require significant development and opportunities exist in the development of these foundational technologies. Issues related to biosafety must be considered as synthetic biology offers the possibility, or at least the public perception of the possibility, of generating, accidentally or intentionally, an organism that may pose a hazard to human health or to the environment.
