Training Programs Formal training On-the-job training Sink or swim Training while working Engineering Education After graduation engineers feel their education was lacking in: 5 years or less out more courses of a practical nature 5 to 15 years out more math and science 15 to 25 years out more business and management More than 25 years more humanities and fine arts 2 Continuing Education 1. Specific and detailed courses on performing of certain professional functions, for instance, computer programming 2. Courses in new technology, so that one can cope with a declining demand for current skills by learning some new ones. 3. General upgrading courses, which bring a person to a higher technical level. 4. Self-directed continuing professional competency or recognizing an area where more expertise is necessary and obtaining that expertise. Advice from other engineers one experienced / one a recent graduate: 1. Act like a pro. Dress neatly and appropriately. 2. Be alert. Stay loose. Keep cool but dont freeze. 3. Finish an assignment before you attempt to present it. 4. Be careful. Check your work. 5. Accept tough assignments. Seek out the complicated and unusual jobs. 6. Learn to describe what you are doing in simple, concise terms. 7. Be wary of the burnt-out old-timers who gripe continually. Dont select such losers as role models. 3 Engineers who advance rapidly Qualities associated with above average achievers by management: 1. They were better at picking up clues regarding others reactions. 2. They listened well and questioned skillfully. 3. They could deal with objections and encouraged positive responses. 4. They gathered more information before presenting ideas. 5. They recognized when to go through channels and when not to, whom to inform, and whom to check with. Why become a P.E. Engineering is a self-regulated profession and sets certain standards for engineers to practice in some jurisdictions- for example, most public agencies. Professional Engineers (P.E.) in California have met a specific set of standards set by the California Board for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors , which falls under the state's Department of Consumer Affairs. Licensure exams are administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying ( NCEES ). Approximately half of all Civil Engineering graduates will go on and become licensed. Roughly a quarter of all Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering graduates will become licensed, and about 10% of all Electrical Engineering graduates will become licensed. 4 Requirements for Registration As a Professional Engineer (P.E.)
