Joseph Marcus August 2, 2009 Experiment 18: Synthesis of Transition Metal Coordination Complexes Introduction: The purpose of this experiment is to synthesize the cis and trans isomers of [Co(en) 2 Cl 2 ]Cl as well as [Co(NH 3 ) 6 ]Cl 3 and [Co(NH 3 ) 5 Cl]Cl 2 . The main principle that will be explored is ligand field strength and its relation to the color of the chemical compound. For coordination complexes, the ligands surrounding the metal ion increase the energy of the d-orbitals due to electrostatic repulsion between the ligands and the d- electrons. Based on the spin of the metal-ligand bond (low spin means large and high spin means small ), the difference between the d-orbital energies is called where, Eqtn 1: = hc/ λ The color of the coordination complex is related to the color of light it absorbs in a particular fashion. The color of the complex is the complementary color of the light it absorbs. In parts 1 and 2, two different coordination complexes are synthesized, [Co(NH 3 ) 6 ]Cl 3 and [Co(NH 3 ) 5 Cl]Cl 2 .
