Joseph Marcus Chem. 1AL Exp. 4 Discussion November 8, 2007 What was the goal of the experiment? The goal of this experiment is to observe how metals react with water and acid. The goal is also to introduce acid-base titrations as a way to find the molecular formula of a compound. Methods: Part 1 of the experiment uses the reaction of a metal with an acid in a test tube to see if gas is produced. The test tube is closed with another test tube placed on top to trap the gas. A match is lit and placed between the two test tubes to test for the gas. A sound is made so hydrogen gas was produced. Part 2 of the experiment uses the acid-base titration of HCl and Ca in water in order to find the molecular formula of calcium hydroxide. The moles of calcium and the moles of hydroxide can be calculated by the data gained from the titration and the experiment. The moles can then be made into a ratio to find the experimental calculated molecular formula. Describing the Experiment:
