KIN 315 Motor Learning Fall 2009 Name Lab 8 Assessing Learning: Contextual Interference Part 2 Introduction Purpose: To examine the effects of schedules of practice on four characteristics of learning: performance improvement, consistency, persistence, and adaptability. Task and Equipment Needed The task is a bean-bag tossing accuracy task that requires a person to toss a bean-bag to land at a target distance. The goal is to toss the bag exactly a prescribed distance. Practice and performance measures will be made for two different distances. Equipment: • bean-bags • masking tape to mark the target distance Procedures Organize the lab participants into five groups of two or three: a Blocked Practice participant, a Random Practice participant, and (if three) a scorer. Place eleven strips of tape on the floor separated by space as wide as the tape. Number the strips from “-10” to “10” using only even numbers starting with the strip closest to the thrower. The spaces between the strips will have the appropriate odd numbered value. All groups will practice tossing beanbags at two criterion distances, measured from the throwing line to tape strip “0”: Task A = 5 feet; Task B = 10 feet. The goal is to achieve a score of “0” on each throw. To change distances, the thrower moves to a different throwing point. Each toss is scored as the numbered strip closest to “0” which the bean-bag is touching when it stops. The two practice conditions differ in the order in which the 16 practice trials for each of the two Tasks are performed. The Blocked Practice participant in each group does a series of 16 trials in a row for each task in the order specified below. In order to counterbalance for an effect on the results from the order of tasks practiced, each of the Blocked Practice participants should practice these tasks in a different order: Group 1: A, B Group 2: B, A Group 3: B, A Group 4: A, B
