Originally scientist in the Rennaisance periods  thought that life formed from non living matter.  Like when flies appear on rotten meat.  Louis Pasteur disproved this spontaneous  generation theory with his pasteurization  experiments.  Now, as far as everyone knows, all life arises from  the reproduction of existing life. This is called  biogenesis.
