PSY 257 Lecture 1 February 3, 2009 What is personality? Anything that can distinguish one person from another. What do we want to know about people to understand personality? We want to know why people are the way they are. It can help us interact with other people. A lot of important decisions in our daily life involve personality. Science is about predictions; we want to predict what type of person will do something in a particular situation. This is not a pure number, but people refer to it as the “magic number”. Comes from behavioral genetic twin studies.
