Lecture PSY 257 February 23, 2009 Psychopathology Freud the conflicts we deal with often cause anxiety at the root of this is fixation (unresolved issues at one of the states) psychopathology caused by fixation very important not to deny anger. Its ok to feel this emotion, you just shouldn’t repress it If drives and conflict at a stage have not been resolved well, the same issues will come up later “repeating our past” Freud’s Therapy - Must for a working alliance between therapist and client. Trust. - In Freud’s office, patients laid on couch away from therapist. Lying down is relaxing, that way patient couldn’t see therapist reactions to statements. - Change : to change, Freud believed patient as to become aware of instincts that seek expression and their underlying causes (unconscious) - Free association : bringing mental content from unconscious into conscious. Asked patient to lie down and say what came to their minds. Analyst must be nonjudgmental and allow client to reveal anything and everything. -
