To which books of the Bible did Augustine turn in his old age? The historical books of the Bible. 2. Rome brought peace, prosperity, stability and the rule of law throughout its diverse empire. Augustine could no more imagine its passing away than Americans can imagine the United States passing away. Imagine the USA is no more. What do you think life would be like? Peaceful? Stable? Prosperous? Lawful? Life could be peaceful, stable and prosperous if a new state was established in its place but most likely it would be the opposite. The US holds the world together, other countries would struggle without the US help and the world would probably not be very peaceful 3. What makes Augustine’s City of God unique? It stand apart from other Christian treaties because it is long, it ranges over varied topics, and it is the first treatise to deal in depth with the revelation of Christianity to social and political life. 4. Wilken believes that Augustine’s City of God is actually a response to what book? Wilken believes that Augustine’s book is a response to Plato’s republic 5. Did Augustine present an account of the ideal city in City of God? No he presented an actual city 6. With what community does Wilken equate the City of God? We equates the city of God to a living community to which one belongs, a society of which one enters and one becomes a part. 7. What is the most characteristic feature of the City of God? The most characteristic feature of the City of God is that it worships the one true God 8. According to Sheldon Wolin, why did Christianity succeed?
