Liang 2 Victor Liang Mr. Perlman English 10H, Period 4 8 December, 2008 A Separate Peace Chapters 7 and 8 1. The butt room is a place for the smokers of Devon School to smoke. When Brinker Hadley brings Gene to the butt room, he and the other boys question Gene regarding Finny’s injury. Gene gives in, and hesitantly tells them that he pushed Finny out of the tree. “I only had to add, ‘pushed him out of the tree’ and the chain of implausibility would be complete, ‘then I…’ just those few words and perhaps this dungeon nightmare would end,” (90). This event is important to the development of the plot because it describes the way other boys see Gene. People are starting to suspect Gene of being involved with Finny’s injury. 2. Brinker has a fascination for politics and offices. So when he brought Gene to the butt room, he interrogated Gene about the tree incident. This is his role in the story. 3.
