Liang 1 Victor Liang Mr. Perlman English 10H, Period 4 30 March, 2009 “Our Town” Act 1 Identifying Facts: 1. The stage manager introduces the location of the act as Grover's Corners, New Hampshire. He reveals the date on which the scene takes place as May 7, 1901. He also indicates several places in Grover's Corners, such as railway station, Polish Town, Congregational Church, Town Hall, Post Office, stores, the jail, grocery store, Mr. Morgan's drugstore, the Public School, High School, Doctor Gibbs' house, Mrs. Gibbs' garden, and Mrs. Webb's garden. He also shows Doctor Gibbs, Mrs. Webb, and Joe Crowell, Jr. to the audience. The stage manager directs the action of Act one by interacting with some of the characters, including Mr. Webb and Professor Willard. He also acts as some characters, like Mrs. Forrest. Oftentimes, the stage manager introduces the characters to the audience. 2. Other natural patterns mentioned in Act One include birth, the formation of fossils, and rain.
