Ch. 13 4.18.17 Presidents during the 1850s: 1. Zachary Taylor (Whig) elected 1848 (dies) 2. Millard Fillmore (Whig) 1850-1853 3. Franklin Pierce (Dem.) Elected 1852 4. James Buchanan (Dem.) Elected 1856 5. Abraham Lincoln (Rep.) Elected 1860 Kansas/Nebraska Act 1. Declared settlers would decide for themselves, by popular sovereignty, about slavery 2. Kansas holds territorial legislature election in 1855. Pro-slavery advocates won and took control of the legislature in Lacompton. 3. aVoter fraud was found due to more votes than registered voters 4. The vote stands even though there was voter fraud 5. Anti-slavery advocates set up an alternative govt. in Topeka and write their own constitution. 6. 3 Days of conflict a. Lawrence, Kansas had a abolitionist paper that was distributed around the territory. Lacompton legislature issued arrest warrants for the heads of the newspaper. i. In May 21, 1856, they throw out the printing press. Fire a cannon through the Free State Hotel, burning it down. One person was killed in “sack of Lawrence.” b. Washington, D.C.-Rep. Preston Brooks from S. Carolina attacked Senator Charles Sumner of Mass. on the floor of the Senate due to remarks made about S. Carolina and its senator. i. This enflames the belief that Southerners were violent. c. Kansas, John Brown took revenge on men he viewed as pro-slavery.
