Types of bonds: covalent bonds Atoms with partially filled electron shells will interact with other atoms in order to achieve a “complete” outer shell (electrons/shell = 2, 8, 8, 18, 18) They can do this by donating or gaining electrons, or by sharing electrons with another atom In a single covalent bond, two atoms share a pair of electrons, one electron donated by each of the atoms Covalent bonds are the strongest bonds; for example, about 105 kcal/mol are required to break a C-H bond See table 2-1 for bond strength comparisons There are 2 types of covalent bonds: polar and nonpolar
