Barela 2 Throughout history there have been men and women who have placed their name in the history books for actions they took. One of these men is held in high regard for his military prowess and ability to lead men during the American Revolutionary War. This man also is known as a traitor for his actions during the same time period in United States history. Benedict Arnold is that man and his actions of heroism and then falling to traitor affected him during this time in history. They also lead to his infamous “label” which some people have been called “Benedict Arnold” by their actions towards others and some countries have also been referred in a similar manner. Benedict Arnold was regarded as a brilliant military leader, who was well respected by his men and by his superiors in the military. Arnold knew how to use his skills as a tactician and outduel his enemies on the battlefield. He proved in numerous battles that he was valuable to the Americans in their fight to beat back the advances of the British (Donnelly 2016, 181). For all of the good that Arnold displayed on the battlefield there was a drive to be recognized as a military hero. With this recognition Arnold also displayed a bad attitude towards those appointed over him and often threatened with resignation if he was not promoted immediately (Donnelly 2016, 182). Even though he was very difficult to deal with he was also very respected and quickly fell in favor with George Washington. Washington placed Arnold in very influential positions which were to lead Arnold down the path to treason and being labeled a traitor (Donnelly 2016, 182). The first of these positions was the military governor of Philadelphia which Arnold held but was also accused of improper dealings and embezzlement (Ducharme & Fine 1995,1314). Arnold was removed from this position by George Washington and it was the tipping point that lead him to reach out to the British with the idea of becoming an asset to them. An individual carrying the plans to West Point was captured (Major Andre) and Arnold’s plan to assist the British was now out in the open (Ducharme & Fine 1995,1314). Arnold was able to escape to a British ship before
Barela 3 he could be captured (Ducharme & Fine 1995,1314). Arnold then went on to become a Brigadier General in the British Army and fight against the Continental Army. Little did Arnold know that his name would be associated with treason and labeling traitors, for years to come. Benedict Arnold was an American Revolutionary War hero, a confirmed traitor, and whose name will go down in infamy as always associated with treason and betraying his country.
