January 7th lecture - Biology and the Tree of Life 1.1 The Cell Theory Are All Organisms Made of Cells? Where Do Cells Come From? 1.2 The Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection What Is Evolution? What Is Natural Selection? 1.3 The Tree of Life Linnaean Taxonomy – Taxonomic Levels – How Many Kingdoms Are There? Using Molecules to Understand the Tree of Life – The rRNA Tree – The Tree of Life Is a Work in Progress 1.4 Doing Biology Why Do Giraffes Have Long Necks? An Introduction to Hypothesis Testing? – The Food Competition Hypothesis: Prediction and Tests – The Sexual Competition: Hypothesis: Predictions and Tests What is a cell? All cells are enclosed by a membrane that regulates passage of materials in and out of the cell. All cells use DNA for their genetic information. Four Parts of the Cell Theory 1. Cells are the structural unit of life. All organisms are composed of cells. Four Parts of the Cell Theory 2. Cells are the functional unit of life. Cells are the smallest entities that have all the properties of life Each cell is (or can potentially generate) an entire organism Single-celled (Paramecium) Four Parts of the Cell Theory 3. Cells are fundamentally similar. Similar structure and organization Similar metabolic strategies. Similar hereditary information. However, specific cell functions can vary!

Four Parts of the Cell Theory 4. Cells come from pre-existing cells. Via cell growth and division Life does not arise from ‘non-life’. All life shares a common ancestor • Because all cells come from preexisting cells, single-celled organisms in a population are related to a single common ancestor, and all cells in a multicellular organism also descend from a single ancestral cell. Two major aspects of living things
