CHM 2046L Sect. 2/12/08 Scheme 1 for Unknowns Possible ions a) Cation : Na+, K+, NH4+ b) Anions: Cl-, NO3-, SO4-2, HSO4-, OHc) Salt Formulas: KCl, NH4Cl or NaCl, etc., only if sure Procedure for the unknown analysis a) Prepare the "neutral water"; if the pH of the deionized water is significantly different than 6-7. i. Add a counted number of drops of deionized water into a clean test tube. Treat with 1-2 drops of HBtB. It should be yellow. Add drops of tap water until the solution is green, indicating a pH of 7.0. The ratio will be neutral for pH testing. b) Clean spot plate, crucible, test tubes, vials, graduated cylinders, droppers, beakers, etc. c) Need: i. pH paper ii. matches iii. pH indicators iv. 1M MaOH v. 6M HAc vi. Sodium cobaltnitrite reagent [ Na3CO(NO2)6] vii. 1MHNO3 viii. 0.02M AgNO3 ix. 0.25M Ba(NO3)2 x. Single Crystal of Fe(OH2)6(NH4)2(SO4)2 xi. 18M H2SO4 d) Get an unknown card from the stockroom and fill in the necessary information. e) Bring to the stockroom and get two unknown samples.
