Andrew Chase Chemistry Chapter 4 October 12, 2009 19. Pentane- liquid, Triacontane-gas, Octane- liquid 22. a) C-C-C-C b) C-C-C b) 2 24. The difference between heat and temperature is that heat is the total amount of energy possessed by the molecules in a piece of matter while temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles that make up the substance. An example is ice melting into water. The moment before melting the average kinetic energy of the ice molecules is the same as the average kinetic energy of the water molecules a moment after melting. The energy is used to change the bonding between the molecules.
