II. CHOOSING SOFTWARE Software is a general term for the various kinds of programs used to operate computers and related devices 1 . Personal computers use two main types of software: system and application. Each of these has subcategories which will be presented in detail. This section is intended to present available software so consumers can pick what is right for them. SYSTEM SOFTWARE System software is used to control the computer hardware and run applications. This software in general controls the basic operations so that the user can tell the computer what to do. System software is required for any computer as it is the spine of all operations. It includes the following subcategories: operating systems, device drivers, utilities, and windowing systems. Operating System: an interface between hardware and user which is responsible for the management and coordination of activities and the sharing of the resources of the computer that acts as a host for computing applications run on the machine 2 .
