Essay #1 First New Deal: - Relief to the Unemployed - Reform of Business - Recovery of the Economy There were three major critics (Thunder on the Left): - Upton Sinclair - Huey Long - Francis Townsend Upton Sinclair was a democratic candidate for governor of California. He advocated the EPIC (End of Poverty in California) movement. - Depression’s cause was the overproduction of production goods, the great machines and factories. - EPIC will remedy depression by gradual stages in a peaceable and human fashion without violence and the overthrow of the political, industrial or social system. - EPIC: unemployed should be put at productive labor, producing everything which they themselves consume and exchange those goods among themselves. - There was also a plan of new cooperative system for the unemployed. Huey Long was the governor of Louisiana (1928-1932) and a U.S. senator (1932-1935). He advocated Share our Wealth. (95% of the nation’s wealth was held by 15% of the population) - Wealth Distribution
