COURSE SYLLABUS Anatomic Pathology CVM 7531 4 Credits  Course Instructors: This course is taught by veterinary pathologists and pathology residents. Veterinary technicians and supporting staff may play a role  in assisting students in their every day experiences. Course Time and Location:  This course will take place in a diagnostic pathology setting (Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory /Private, State or County/, Department  of Veterinary Pathology of an accredited College of Veterinary Medicine) approved as a 4 th  year rotation site by the WesternU  Committee on Clinical Instruction.  Students are expected to participate in a  minimum  of 30 hours of veterinary pathology experience  (gross anatomic pathology, histopathology, slide seminars, presentations, journal review sessions) in each week of the four week  rotation.  Time commitments are designated by the clinical preceptor, but students should expect to work parallel hours with the  pathology personnel.  Rotation participation typically averages 40hours per week. Course Description:   (Course Purpose, aims/goals) The rotation provides students with hands-on experience in diagnostic pathology of multiple species with an opportunity to perform  necropsies, review pathology submission forms, review and write pathology reports (description and diagnoses), and request ancillary  tests. Students will also have an opportunity to follow up with histopathology of assigned cases and to look into histopathology of  submitted surgical materials (biopsies) if available.  Depending on a student’s interest and availability, the rotation may also include  some clinical pathology experience. These activities will be performed under the supervision of pathologists and pathology residents.
