Essay Question Uchitelle has effectively describes the effects on people who are laid off. The respect principle asks us to treat everyone as as end in itself, that is, as having an intrinsic value. And we should not treat people as a means, that is, as having instrumental value. Uchitelle discusses how from a stable lively hood people suffer psychological strain from job insecurity. These people usually never recover, that is, receive a pay as well as the one they received on their lost job. This causes severe psychological and emotional pain. The work they did with utmost loyalty is of no consequence, is unnecessary or even a distraction for the firm. They lose their dignity. Lay offs psychological reactions like distrust, depression, diffidence and fear of future lay offs. The corporate raiders targeted the great companies in the twentieth century. They attacked corporations to unlock shareholder value, extruding money by breaking up selling off, downsizing and doing more with less and less. This is a clear example of the big companies fail to think about the dignity of the laid off and selfishly think about their own interest of maximizing profits. Right to-work laws undermined the unions especially in the South.
