The two primary considerations here are the amount of electrical noise likely in the facility, plus the fact that the media will need to be fairly robust to prevent damage. An analysis of a few media types follows: UTP – reasonably durable, but very susceptible to interference. STP – better shielding than UTP, but expensive. A possible solution Cable – good shielding and durability. A possible solution Fiber – no interference problems, but extremely fragile and expensive Radio – not appropriate for indoors Infrared – susceptible to interference from smoke, low data rate, LOS only Based on the above, STP or cable will work but cable is probably the best alternative due to its cost. As a side note, many factories still used early versions of Ethernet which were based on cable as a media (10base2 and 10base5)....
