Jose L Ortiz Jr. IT - 430-W02 February 1, 2009 Assignment 1 1) Discuss some of the common factors that go into defining the scope of a penetration test. A penetration tester is an ethical hacker who is hired to attempt to compromise the network of a company for the purpose of assessing its data security. A penetration tester is going to test against vulnerabilities and threats. Company can hire different vendors to test their network security for vulnerabilities, the companies should attempt to test network not just one time but once every quarter and they rely on more than just one company to test their networks, each company performing different tests. Some of the tests perfom by ethical hackers are: Black-box test - The penetration tester has no prior knowledge of a company network. White-box test - The tester has complete knowledge of the internal network. The tester might be given network diagrams or a list of operating systems and applications prior to performing tests. Gray-box or crystal-box test
