Chris Morrissey October 28, 2006 Class 17 Homework According to the theory of Markan Priority, a concept largely agreed upon by modern New Testament scholars, the gospels of Matthew and Luke were both written using the gospel of Mark as a source. This hypothesis is critical in tracing the evolution of Pontius Pilate throughout the canonical texts. The characterization of Pilate in each of the three gospels is slightly altered to conform to the needs of their authors. By examining these alterations it is clear that both Matthew and Luke found Mark’s portrayal of Pilate unfavorable and redacted it accordingly. In the gospel of Mark, Pilate plays a significant role in the killing of Jesus. Although he does not agree with the jealous motives of the Jews (15:10), he does little to counteract them. His sole attempt to question them comes after the crowd insists Jesus be crucified, when he asks, “Why, what has he done?”(15:14). Of course the crowd is not persuaded and Pilate makes no further attempts before handing him over to be crucified
