What is the difference between an element and a compound? An element is only one type of atom. A compound is made up of different types of elements. 3. Distinguish the differences in composition between an acid and a base. An acid has more hydronium ions, and a base has more hydroxide ions. 4. Identify the type of reaction that releases free energy. Free energy is the energy in a system available for work. 5. How are the processes of oxidation and reduction related? In oxidation, a reactant loses one or more electrons, becoming more positive in charge. In reduction, gains electrons, becoming more negative on charge. 6.
