Cell membrane – lipid bilayer that forms the outer boundary of a cell 3. Cell theory – theory that all living things are made up of cells, that cells are the basic units of an organism, and that cells come only from existing cells 4. Eukaryote – cell that contains a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles 5. Nucleus – organelle that contains most of the DNA and directs most of the cell’s activities 6. Organelle – part of a cell with a specialized function suspended in the cytoplasm 7. Prokaryote – unicellular organism that lacks a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles 4-2 8. Actin – one of the two protein filaments in a muscle cell that function in contraction 9. Cell wall – rigid structure that surrounds the cells of plants, fungi, many protists and most bacteium 10. Chloroplast – plastid containing chlorophyll; the site of photosynthesis
