Joseph Leonard – 4/2/08 – p949 section 47-2 and 47-2 vocabulary 47-1 Aorta – largest artery in the human body; carries blood from the left ventricle to systemic circulation Aortic valve – semilunar valve on the left side of the heart Arteiole – branch of the arteries that gives rise to capillaries Artery – vessel that carries blood away from the heart to the body’s organs Atherosclerosis – disease characterized by the building of fatty materials on the interior walls of the arteries Atrioventricular (AV) node – group of nerves in the heart that functions in the heartbeat Atrioventricular valve – one-way valve separating each atrium from the ventricle beneath it Atrium – anterior chamber of the heart Blood pressure – force that blood exerts against the walls of the blood vessel Capillary – smallest vessel in the blood vessel network Cardiovascular system – the blood, the heart, and the blood vessels Circulatory system – system that distributes the oxygen and nutrients to the cells in all parts
