Joseph Sperber Matt Garite Writing 102 T/R 11-1220 Sleepwalking into the Future The world we live in has constantly been moving forward evolving and changing, from the civilizations of Rome and Greece to Spain and Britain, to the industrial revolution. Some changes have been for the better of society and some have had negative impact. Fossil Fuel has had many beneficial uses for society such as transportation, heating, and electricity. As we run out of fossil fuels we start to look at what our lives will possibly be like without fossil fuels. James Howard Kunstler gives us his beliefs of what life will be like as the world runs out of fossil fuels, as well as what life will be like after we run out of fuel in the first chapter of his book “The Long Emergency.” At the beginning James informs us that these are his beliefs and not what he would like to happen to the world. He then tells us that Americans in particular have been ignorant of the coming future and are walking blindly off a cliff he calls “The Long Emergency.” James then goes on to say that he believes that with the changing future the United States may not survive as a whole and may break up into smaller colony like areas. James then goes on to say that he predicts that we are entering a military strife era in which nations compete for raw materials and
