April 4 th Distinctiveness of ancient Judaism Every ancient religion had its own distinction May have struck outsiders as interesting With the absence of the temple a new tradition began 5 books of the Torah paid a lot of attention to sacrifice Specifically 3 rd book Leviticus Priest had different rules Torah paid a lot of attention to these things 1 st problem may not build temples except in designated location The sacrifices offered to God were the heart of the Jewish Religion Temples were destroyed in 70 CE in a rebellion against Roman Empire Was never rebuilt, were attempts but never finished The torah was based on sacrifice but tradition was lost which set a new direction for Judaism Jews were shocked at loss of the temple The worship of God was now possible The temple was the stop gap to worship now no temple Small crisis In part what helped Jews get through crisis Roman law protected them even though they fought a long war to end rebellion Jews were waiting for temple to be rebuilt In Judea the problem was more concrete
