April 2 nd What in fact was common to the widely dispersed Jews in ancient world? We don’t know What do we know about ancient Judaism? Most important text for Jewish history is the bible Still used in religious environments today Bible was not interpreted the same way everywhere Local interpretations varied The bible or text itself was everywhere Encounter a paradox most important cause of unity and most important cause of dispute No other ancient religious cultures had a book that played this big of a role We know some interpretations because they are written down We have the interpretations of Philoh Dead Sea scrolls- separatists Jews Buildings had fairly similar design Motives for building these buildings Euergetism rich people were eager to give money to the public good Cemeteries Jews buried their dead Wrote epitaphs Indoor cemeteries they were sheltered from the elements 6 underground Jewish cemeteries found in Rome 3 were destroyed in creation for modern city Cemeteries have inscriptions Know what age they died at Many died young but some lived an old age
