History reminds us mostly of how wars were won by the outcome of the battle. During the 1800’s there was a great upheaval throughout the world, specifically in America. The United States was threatened by non-existence or succumbing to the ideals of the Confederates or the South during this time. Ultimately the Union, or the North, prevailed and made its ideals more meaningful. The South was severely undermanned compared to the north and was behind the eight ball at the very start of the war. They were fighting for the “states rights” as remembered by them and it was purely democratic. The ongoing question that lingers today is how the depleted South was able to hold off the reinforced North for so long? In typical warfare, the home field advantage aspect cannot be overlooked or underestimated. Most of the Civil War was fought in the Southern territory. The Confederate soldiers knew the terrain better and were able to take an advantage of that. The North was fighting blindly into foreign soil which caused more casualties. Also, the South did not have an offensive for the most of the war. They were simply an underdog attempting to preserve their succession from the North to preserve their “states rights.” The South not only had the home field advantage, but they also had far superior and more militaristic leaders than the North had. Most of the generals in the Confederate Army had fought in battles before and there is no substitute for experience. General Lee of the South was an extremely powerful general.
