Maria Tsiolkas bio 212 The organic component of bone is collagen, while the inorganic portions of the bone include hydroxyapatite. Collagen configuration is what distinguishes the type of bone that is made and is made up of many proteins creating its structure. Cortical or trabecular bones are the two types. Osteoblasts build the bone up, and are found within the lacuna of the bone, while osteoclasts are what break the bone down. The lacuna is one of the three types of cavities that are present in bone, with the other two being marrow cavities and haversian canals. Hydroxyapatite is made up of includes calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, calcium fluoride, calcium hydroxide and citrate. It is a crystalline structure that takes the form of platelets or rods, and involves the release and storage of calcium two plus ion to and from the bone. Osteoporosis and Osteogenesis imperfecta are both diseases of the bone that lead to fragility. Osteoporosis is when the bone mineral density if reduced
