Austin Haywood December 9, 2009 Stock-Trak Exercise Throughout the duration of my experience with the Stock-Trak Trading Exercise, I decided to take some chances with the futures markets investing in gold, corn and oil. My reasoning behind this strategy was that I wanted to take chances that I would be unwilling to take with my own personal portfolio. Some of these risks returned greatly while others severely hurt my portfolio. I also tried investing in a wide variety of stocks, even ones that I had never heard of before. I used CNBC and Bloomberg to help me find information on stocks that I had never heard of and to find out which securities to buy and sell. The advice I received from CNBC and Bloomberg ended up hurting my portfolio. I took advice for Jim Cramer’s TV show “Mad Money” to purchase stock in Getty Reality Corp, Southwestern Energy, and International Paper Co. As a result of this advice along with poor decisions made by me, I suffered hard losses in my stock investments during the 14 week period. Even though I had negative returns in my stock investments, my total portfolio value still had a small gain of 1.01% from the $1,000,000.00 initial value to finish at the end of 14 weeks at a value of $1,010,609.82. My investment in the gold futures is what aided in giving my portfolio a positive return. Compared to the S&P 500 performance throughout the 14 week period, my
