Vekaria 1 Keyur Vekaria Eunsook Ha Rhee English 812 09/29/09 Essay 1 (Draft 2) Humans Cruelty to Animals People as years pass by, are getting more and more familiar with the term Animal Liberation . Much of western culture does not have concern for animal suffering, unlike Hindu thoughts and Buddhist ideas. Equality is a moral ideal, not a simple assertion of fact. There is no logically compelling reason for assuming that difference in ability between two people justifies any difference in the amount of consideration we give to satisfying their needs and interests. Similarly, animals must have equal rights as humans. Peter Singer makes a very similar argument in his article “Animal Liberation”, where he writes that we must stop all the violence on non-humans. Like Singer, I believe that we should not kill, experiment or slaughter animals for our personal benefits. In this essay, I will talk about how humans abuse non-humans. Speciesism which involves assigning different values or rights to animals on the basis of their species membership, can be seen in the widespread practice of experimenting on other species in order to see if certain substances are safe for human beings, or to try out various new compounds just in case something turns up. People sometimes think that all this experimentation is for vital medical purposes, and so will reduce suffering overall. This comfortable belief is very wide of the mark.
