Can’t explain the gender gap Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study: 2003: Standardized tests given in 34 countries to 8 th graders Girls did better in 18 countries Boys did better in 13 countries Same in 2 countries Average difference: Not significantly different d. Beliefs about Gender Teachers: Mention boys more often than girls as their most gifted students Parents: On average, report that their sons are more gifted than their daughters Adolescents: Boys believe they have higher academic ability than girls do
