Omar Branez MUS 101 On November 8, 2009, I cut short a weekend with my family and endured a minor case of the flu. This was done in order to attend the Met Live in HD broadcast of Giacomo Puccini’s opera Turandot. I was torn by whether to consider it a complete concert experience, for the atmosphere was more suited to that of a movie theater. People were speaking with one another throughout the performance, since the fear of disturbing the players was eliminated by the nature of the event. The intermissions were actually a neat feature, for instead of encouraging you to head or the lobby and purchase overpriced snacks, they provided interviews with cast members giving deeper insight into the piece. Overall, however, there was a disconnection between the audience and the performers which I felt was an integral feature of the live music experience. I mused that I could have just downloaded the performance off the internet, had the same experience, and would have saved $15. My favorite piece of this opera was (the admittedly safe answer) the aria Nessun Dorma.
