Eric Stern 1 4/20/09 Anthro 2400 Assignment #9 Elements of Genocide From the beginning of mankind, humans have fought one another for survival. Although humans have taken great strides in the name of peace, there are still instances of violence across the globe. In some cases, these acts of violence can escalate to genocide. What elements must be present to institute a genocide? One of the first and most necessary elements is the presence of two different groups. A historical example is the Nazi’s attempted genocide of many groups, most notably against the Jews. In the Rwandan genocide of 1994, Hutus, an ethnic group native to Rwanda, murdered thousands of Tutsis, another native Rwandan people. In 2000, a mass grave was discovered in Cote d’Ivoire. This grave led to many debates over whether the countries IPF Socialist Part was committing genocide against another group coined the Jula. Although there are differences between the two groups involved in a genocide,
