(March 8, 1943) The remote island of Sorba finds itself 1100 km east of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean. For centuries, the people who inhabited this island lived a quiet and peaceful existence virtually cut-off from modern civilization as we know it.

“Father! Father! I-“ “What is wrong my son?” “Did mother Maki tell you the news?” “No Wali. What is the matter?” “While tribesmen and I were out hunting for boar, we saw something we have never seen before.” “What do you mean?” “Well, we saw what looked like a giant bird flying in the sky; an enormous bird that appeared to lay an egg right as it flew by!.” “Why would a bird lay an egg in the sky?” “I do not know father Boka, but this egg fell from the sky and it seems as though it landed in the Northern Blackland!.” Chief Boka reflected on this for three days, contemplating on what should be done with the news of this mysterious egg. The Sorbians had been well aware of the dangers of the Northern Blacklands, yet Chief Boka refused to simply leave this mystery unresolved. Nothing of the sort had ever happened on the island. If there was in fact some unknown creature roaming the Blacklands, it might eventually make its way down to the villages, a threat the Chief wasn’t willing to take. He set out to find the egg with two teams of eight tribesmen. The Chief would lead one team, while his son Wali took the other. By morning, they had left, embarking on what would be an arduous two day journey through the thick jungles towards the Blacklands. The Blacklands lay just beyond the jungle, thus they would need to go through it in order to reach their destination. Once
