Experiment 4 : Factors Affecting the Rate of a Reaction- simulation Purpose: To study the effect of concentration, temperature, and catalysis on the rate of a reaction. Summary of Method: Data is provided in this experiment. The basic reaction – iodide ions and persulphate ions-is 2I - (aq) + S 2 O 8 2- (aq) I 2 (aq) + 2SO 4 2- (aq) (1) The I 2 (aq) produced from this reaction, in turn, reacts with thiosulphate ions: I 2 (aq) + 2S 2 O 3 2- (aq) 2I - (aq) + S 4 O 6 2- (aq) (2) The latter reaction is the more rapid of the two, making reaction 1 the rate- determining step. Finally, we determine that all the thiosulphate ions are consumed by means of the starch added to the solution. As soon as I 2 (aq) remains in solution, it reacts with the starch to produce a deep blue colour. Part I: Concentration In the first series of tests, we study the effect of the concentration of I - (aq), while the concentration of S 2 O 8 2- (aq) is kept constant.
