Experiment 2 : Packing of Particles Purpose: To determine the coordination number of various types of packing of particles in metallic solids. List of Materials used: - Marshmallows - Cherries - Toothpicks Summary of Method: 1) Place a marked sphere on the table. Then place as many equal- sized spheres around it in the same plane, with each sphere touching the marked sphere. Count the number of spheres around the centre one. Using a different size of sphere (cherries), do the same thing again. Does the size of the sphere change the number of neighbours around the central sphere? 2) Place some spheres on top of this layer so that each sphere touches the central sphere. Note how many spheres could be placed in a plane below the central sphere? 3) In each plane, connect the spheres to each other with toothpicks. Place a layer of 3 spheres on the table with the base of the triangle towards you. Now place the 7-sphere layer on top so the central sphere fits into the middle of the triangle of spheres on the table. On this, place a third layer consisting of 3 spheres with the base
