Lesson 10 Key Questions 46) a) The five ways in which energy can be stored in a molecule are: energy of electrons, rotational energy, vibrational energy, transitional energy and nuclear energy b) Energy of electrons* and nuclear energy are potential energy. c) Energy of electrons*, rotational energy, vibrational energy and transitional energy are kinetic energy (*Note: energy of electrons can be considered both kinetic energy and potential energy) 47) C 2 H 4 + 3O 2 2CO 2 + 2H 2 O H o f = -1409.5 kJ C 2 H 6 C 2 H 4 + H 2 H o f = + 136.7 kJ H 2 + 1/2O 2 H 2 O H o f = -285.5 kJ C 2 H 4 +3O 2 +C 2 H 6 + H 2 + 1/2O 2 2CO 2 + 2H 2 O + C 2 H 4 + H 2 + H 2 O 3O 2 +C 2 H 6 + 1/2O 2 2CO 2 + 2H 2 O + H 2 O C 2 H 6 + 7/2O 2 2CO 2 + 3H 2 O Heat of combustion = (-1409.5 kJ + 136.7 kJ – 285.5 kJ) = -1558.3 kJ 48) The value of kJ/person available to a society means the amount of energy available to a person within that society. The amount of energy available could mean food, oil, electricity… Now compare

The average household in Canada has around 2 vehicles, in Ethiopia you’d be very privileged to have 1 vehicle. The average household in Canada consumes much more oil/gas and electricity than one in Ethiopia. The more energy (kJ) available per capita in a given society can relate to the standard of living of that society. 49) Experiment #3 is on the next pages. 49A) The essay answers can be found after Experiment #3...
