Music Lecture Study Guide Johannes Brahms 1833-1897 Country of origin – Germany Instrument – piano Occupation – composer/ musician 1833 born in Hamburg, Germany At age 10 played piano in dance halls and cordellos to get money for family 1853 the composer Schumann wrote a published article claiming Brahms as the next great master The Schumann’s take him into home. HE falls in love with Clara Robert becomes mentally ill in 1856 and dies 1863 moved to Vienna for the East 34 years of his life. Died in Vienna of cancer at age 64 Brahms music is rooted in classical period He went back and used the old classical forms but gave in a romantic twist He became the heir of the symphony passed on from Beethoven Bohemian bachelor – just like Beethoven Modern Time Period French Impressionist Painting o Used broad brush strokes and vibrant colors o Viewed up close appears unfinished o Viewed from a distance it has truth Focused on light, color, and atmosphere Depicted impermanence, change, and fluidity ( light reflecting on water)
